Network Rail promises £20m to fund new stations

Network Rail and the DfT have opened the next round of funding for building new stations or reopening closed ones.

Councils and TOCs are invited to bid for a share of the £20m second phase of the New Stations Fund, which will fund up to 75% of their proposals.

The first round of money from the New Stations Fund was awarded by a panel of industry experts in 2013.

The winning stations were Pye Corner in Wales, which opened in December 2014, Newcourt in Exeter, which opened in June 2015, and Lea Bridge in London, which opened in May 2016.

New stations at Ilkeston near Derby and Kenilworth near Coventry are due to open soon.

Norrie Courts, director of stations at Network Rail, said: “The new station funding stream represents an important part of our railway upgrade plan to improve Britain’s railways, delivering real and visible improvements for passengers.”

Rail minister Paul Maynard MP said: “The New Stations Fund is a great example of how our record investment in the railways and work with local authorities and industry is delivering better journeys for passengers.

“Through this fund, passengers will benefit from new connections and faster journeys, making it easier to get to work and visit friends and family. It will also provide a major boost for local economies and support the delivery of local housing developments.”

The deadline for bidders is 18 November. To apply, click here.
