CAF commences design and engineering on DMUs for Wales and Borders franchise

Spanish rail manufacturer CAF has announced it is beginning the design and engineering work for the highly-anticipated Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) for the Wales and Borders franchise.

Being built at the company’s facility in Newport, South Wales, CAF is to supply 77 of DMUs, due to enter service from early 2022.

In an announcement this week, the manufacturer noted that engineering and project teams from CAF are working with Transport for Wales to ensure that the new vehicles – of which 51 two-car and 26 three-car units will be delivered – will meet customer requirements and deliver high performance on the rail network.

The trains, all DMUs, are based on the Civity platform designed for commuter and regional services. They will feature “the latest safety technology combined with exacting interior design specifications for customer comfort,” including wi-fi and air conditioning.

Richard Garner, CAF’s UK Director, said: “Work on the Wales and Borders franchise project is now well underway to ensure the project is delivered on time.

“CAF is proud to be playing a key role in delivering Transport for Wales’ commitment to transform rail travel for passengers. There will be faster, more frequent services and increased customer capacity, with passengers experiencing a high-quality, reliable and comfortable service.”

Chief executive of Transport for Wales Rail Services Kevin Thomas said that the new trains “will transform the passenger experience” and attract new customers to the railway by making it more accessible.

He added: “We are here to deliver Welsh Government’s vision of a high-quality, safe, and accessible transport network that the people of Wales are proud of.”
