New Northern trains hit two million milestone

Since the launch of Northern’s new trains in July, more than two million customer journeys have been recorded.

33 new trains are in service across Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside and South and West Yorkshire, calling ay 97 different stations.

The new trains are part of a £500m investment that will see 101 brand new trains added to Northern’s fleet, with the majority expected to be operational by the end of the year and the rest of the rollout to be complete by May 2020.

The new trains are more spacious and fully accessible for wheel chair users and cyclists, with Wifi and in-seat power.

David Brown, Northern’s managing director, said:

“Our network is busier than it has been for a generation, with more than 100 million journeys set to be made this year.

“Our fantastic new trains are a true step-change in travelling experience and I’m delighted that more than two million journeys have already been made.”

Future trains will be introduced in locations such as Accrington, Barnsley, Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley, Chesterfield, Lincoln, Nottingham, Sheffield, Stockport, Wakefield and York.

Northern’s existing fleet of 268 trains are currently undergoing refurbishment and the added benefit of 2,000 extra services every week since 2016.

Work is also being done to improve the stations on Northern’s network to support the largest modernisation programme in a generation.
