Govia Thameslink Railway launches Great Sock Appeal

Selected homeless charities and Govia Thameslink are coming together this Christmas to give out socks to rough sleepers through the Great Sock Appeal.

Socks are not the first thing comes to mind when you think of donating to the homeless but a pair of socks are an essential item for keeping feet warm and dry.

Without them there is a risk of fungal infections, blisters and even trench foot. Socks are also responsible for keeping feet healthy, upholding good circulation and managing diabetes.

With the cold temperatures on the streets in December it can only take 30 minutes for frostbite to set in.

On the back of recent support of WrapUp London, Govia Thamaslink Railway continues its campaign to support the homeless this winter with Great Sock Appeal.

Collections will take place at stations on the 5th of December between 7am – 10am, giving commuters chance to donate a fresh new pair of socks to those in need.

Donation collections will take place at Bedford, Luton, St. Albans, Stevenage, Royston, Blackfriars, East Croydon and Brighton.

Steve White, Chief Operating Officer at GTR, said: “After speaking to numerous homeless charities we learnt how vitally important a new pair of socks really is for keeping feet warm and dry, and we are delighted to support them in this work.

“Christmas is a time for giving, and all it takes is one pair of socks, less than the price of a coffee, to improve the life of a homeless person this winter. We want to thank our customers and colleagues for their ongoing support for those in need.”
