NDS brings ballast operations in-house

Network Rail’s National Delivery Service (NDS) has brought ballast handling and sales in-house, to save £1m a year.

Ballast operations at Carlisle, Crewe, Bescot, Toton, Doncaster, Whitemoor and Eastleigh local distribution centres (LDCs) will now be operated and managed by Network Rail.

40 staff from the previous contract have been transferred to Network Rail. The move will also support increased sustainability, using more recycled product on Network Rail’s infrastructure.

Martin Elwood, director of Network Rail NDS, said: “This is fantastic news for us. As well as welcoming 40 new people into our team who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience this change will provide our customers with better value for money and open doors to other sales opportunities with our partners in the industry.”
