TCR North 2019: Putting passengers first with innovation
As morning rolled into afternoon at TransCityRail North, attendees once more gathered in the conference hall to listen attentively to talks on past, present and future – bringing innovation, investment and information to the rail industry of the North and their users.
Industry experts including Abellio commercial director, Stewart Fox-Mills, and Network Rail’s managing director for the North West and Central region, Tim Shoveller, took to the stage to restart proceedings.
Both were clear in their messages; the rail industry’s job becomes so much more successful when passengers are put first and the supply chain strives to approach problems through the eyes of the end user.
Mr Shoveller declared there was no better time to be working in the rail industry, and to deliver the promises and commitment required the industry must adapt and evolve with changing goals.

Vertiv’s Emiliano Cevenini added to the innovation discussion with details of edge infrastructure, before a fascinating panel of speakers delved into discussions on HS2, NPR and, of course, the very purpose of events like TCR North - connecting the North.
Closing off the daytime conference, Network Rail took to the stage once more, with head of strategic planning, Helen McAllister, to outline one of the industry’s biggest challenges – tackling climate change and emissions.
Ms McAllister said: “Traction decarbonisation network strategy looks at the needed changes to rolling stock and infrastructure to meet CO2 emissions.
“The Paris agreement aims to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees, and the government wants to be the net zero carbon emissions by 2040.”
To round off the daytime conference, Network Rail unveiled a live demo of their new portal to help present the supply chain's geo-location of renewals activity.
