Welsh trains £200k makeover set to start

Work begins today on an 18-month programme to modernise fleets of Welsh trains.

A £200,000 investment from Arriva Trains Wales (ATW), the Welsh Government, and Transport for Wales will refurbish 120 carriages in the Class 158 and 150 fleets.

Fully accessible toilets, additional wheelchair spaces, door modifications and toilet retention—meaning the Class 158 units will be the first in Wales where no passenger service toilets flush onto the tracks— are amongst the improvements that will take place at the Machynlleth Traincare Depot.

ATW’s managing director, Tom Joyner, said: “We are passionate about making rail travel accessible for everyone, no matter what their mobility needs.

“We have worked hard to deliver a comprehensive plan for these trains and customers can look forward to enjoying these benefits soon.

“This investment will go a long way to achieving those goals and shows a commitment to leave the rail industry in the best possible position at the end of the Arriva Trains Wales franchise.”
