CMI to address mismatch between job seekers and employers
Employers are missing out on the UK’s top executives because they have failed to adapt to new job hunting behaviours. According to data released by the Chartered Management Institute, many senior posts will remain unfilled because of a mismatch between employer recruitment and employee job-search tactics.
The findings, which follow a major research programme involving the Institute for Employment Studies and Department for Work & Pensions, show that two-thirds of the UK’s managers (67 per cent) admit they regularly browse relevant job adverts, with 56 per cent also reporting that they are actively seeking a more senior position.
However, with 80 per cent of organisations revealing that they are struggling to recruit staff with the right skills*, it is worrying to note that many employers appear to be looking in the wrong place. For example, although 72 per cent of managers claim they are most likely to use ‘online job searches’ and 76 per cent suggest they focus specifically on ‘online job adverts’, just 37 per cent say they found their current role via the Internet.
Jo Causon, director, marketing and corporate affairs at the Chartered Management Institute, says: “Clearly a concern for employers should be about how to avoid wasting the impressive talent pool that exists in the UK. There is certainly a need to adjust recruit behaviour because without casting the recruitment net wider, organisations run the risk of losing out on senior staff who have embraced technology to boost their career prospects.”
Reacting to these findings, the Chartered Management Institute has teamed up with All the Top Bananas to launch a free-to-use online job service with the intention of bringing employers and the UK’s management and leadership community together online.
By searching company websites, newspaper sites and online job boards the new service has been launched with an index of over 200,000 jobs. Available via www.managers.org.uk/findajob it allows candidates at all stages of their career to search by location, salary or role and represents 1 in 3 jobs advertised in the UK.
Job seekers can also register with www.allthetopbananas.com to receive regular e-mail updates of jobs that meet their chosen search criteria, and can upload CVs in order to give it exposure to the hundreds of employers and recruitment agencies using the service.
