Independent adjudicator appointed to oversee Crossrail construction
Transport Minister Andrew Adonis and London Mayor Boris Johnson today announced the appointment of Tony Gregory as the new independent Crossrail Complaints Commissioner.
The Crossrail Complaints Commissioner, will assist members of the public who feel they have not been able to satisfactorily resolve issues around building work directly connected with Crossrail.
Andrew Adonis said:
"Crossrail will transform London by providing a massive economic boost and by making journeys for passengers quicker and more convenient. We are working to ensure construction is completed quickly and efficiently and at the minimum level of disruption possible.
"It's also important to bear in mind that during massive construction programmes like this, it is possible some residents and businesses may experience disruption. In making this appointment we want to ensure people have the appropriate level of support from someone independent of Government, the Mayor of London and construction companies."
Boris Johnson said:
"Crossrail, which will be the largest addition to the transport network in London and the South East for 50 years, is vital to the London and UK economy. A project of this scale requires careful management, and Transport for London and Crossrail are working to minimise disruption and ensure people are informed.
"As construction progresses, Community Relations representatives and Crossrail's 24 hour public helpdesk will help to resolve any problems that might occur. Where this cannot be achieved it is essential that Londoners are protected and that issues can be referred to an independent adjudicator. I am therefore delighted that Tony Gregory has been appointed as the new independent Crossrail Complaints Commissioner to resolve any such issues."
Residents inconvenienced as a direct result of Crossrail construction work will be invited to approach either Crossrail or their contractors directly for resolution in the first instance.
If they feel their complaint has not been dealt with properly they will be invited to contact the Complaints Commissioner who will arbitrate in any dispute. The Commissioner will also advise Crossrail how to reduce the instance of complaints.
The Crossrail Complaints Commissioner replaces the Crossrail Referee as Cross London Rail Links Limited has now become a delivery rather than a planning organisation following Royal Assent of the Crossrail Bill and subsequent signing of the governance agreements last year.
