IRO degrees and diplomas conferred
Following academic tradition IRO students were among the graduates ‘capped’ by Glasgow Caledonian University’s (GCU) Chancellor Lord Macdonald of Tradeston at the university’s summer ceremony held in the city’s Royal Concert Hall.
The chancellor conferred the university’s degree or diploma on a total 21 IRO students in this first IRO graduation event since the courses were launched in 2005. All had successfully completed the courses they began three years ago to obtain either a diploma in Higher Education or a Bachelor of Science degree in Railway Operational Management.
Reflecting on this milestone event in the development of the IRO Chris Daughton, the Institution’s chief executive, said: “The day marked a milestone in the IRO’s development and certainly a first for the railway industry. Seeing our first students being presented with their hard won degrees or diplomas made me very proud, not only of our students but of the organisation itself. Without the IRO’s education programme few of those being honoured would have had the opportunity of obtaining university level qualifications, our warmest congratulations to the ten diploma and eleven degree graduates. Combining study at such a level with the demands of professional and family life is quite a challenge. They have clearly demonstrated that it is possible and their success will hopefully encourage many of their colleagues to follow the example they have set.”
