Green Week raises environmental awareness for rail staff
East Midlands Trains is working to promote environmental awareness during Stagecoach’s annual Green Week. Staff will take part in a series of activities and training to raise awareness of the importance of preventing pollution.
Initiatives the company has already introduced include using a fuel additive to improve fuel economy, an energy-saving engine standby system, managing heating at depots to reduce gas and cutting electricity use at stations.
Across East Midlands Trains, overall energy use has been reduced by 12% compared to last year. Waste-recycling is being introduced at all stations and offices and EMT is now recycling over 70% of its waste.
East Midlands Trains managing director David Horne said: “Green Week is now an established and important part of our efforts to protect the environment and become a more sustainable business.
“But we know the global challenge we all face on climate change is not just about what we do during this week, but how we make a difference every day of the year. That’s why we will continue to work hard to encourage our staff and help our customers to adopt greener lifestyles.”
