Bedford cable theft leads to delays and cancelled services

Cable theft caused huge disruption for passengers north and south ofLondonlast night, with four train operating companies’ services affected.

Signalling problems atBedfordled to delays on First Capital Connect’s Thameslink route, with services suspended betweenBedfordandLuton. A replacement bus service is available and tickets will be accepted on services to London King’s Cross and Moorgate.

London Midland trains to Bletchley did not stop atBedford, and East Midlands Trains services similarly could not call atBedfordstation. Southeastern trains were also affected.

Roger Perkins from First Capital Connect said: “Last night there was deliberate criminal attempt to steal cable from an area north of Flitwick.

“Twenty three of the 109 trains we use every morning are still trapped in sidings so we can’t run any services in or out ofBedford.

“Network Rail is looking at the damage at the moment and working on it and the latest information is that they hope to have the problem fixed by lunchtime.”
