A new station was officially opened at Gourock yesterday. The opening ceremony was led Alex Neil MSP, the cabinet secretary for infrastructure and capital investment, and attended by Network Rail officials.
This marks the completion of Network Rail’s two year plan to provide a “bright and more welcoming environment,” for both passengers and staff. The renovations came to a total of £8m.
Renovation of the station has also included the installation of a sea wall, a covered walkway to connect the station to the ferry terminal nearby and an expanded car park in keeping with objectives to better integrate rail, road and ferry travel.
Neil said: “The Scottish Government is committed to enhancing rail services. Our £5bn blueprint for the future of Scotland’s trains and rail network, announced earlier this summer, sets out a raft of measures for attractive and affordable fares, supports growth in freight and demands better integration of rail services with buses, bikes and ferries.”
Gourock has been identified as a key transport hub for the area so has been prioritised to accommodate future redevelopment of the waterfront area.
David Simpson, Network Rail route managing director for Scotland, said: “Gourock Station is now fit for the modern commuter – providing a functional, yet attractive, building that creates a great first impression for visitors to the waterfront.”
ScotRail’s managing director Steve Montgomery added: “Our customers will undoubtedly appreciate this excellent investment in Gourock station, with much improved facilities and a more welcoming atmosphere.”
