Nexus launches hunt for apprentices
In the latest round of apprenticeship take-up in the rail sector, Nexus is recruiting 10 new apprentices across Tyne and Wear.
The public body delivers public transport across the region, including the Metro, and is recruiting for roles in engineering, transport planning, finance and training.
It is hoped that hundreds of applications will be received from a variety of backgrounds, ages and genders before the closing date of 17 June.
John Fenwick, director of finance and resources at Nexus, said that the organisation has had “some notable success” in developing apprenticeships throughout the years, and is continuing this “vitally important” investment in order to have the right skills to deliver essential public transport services into the future.
“For September’s intake, we are looking beyond the more traditional engineering apprenticeships and are expanding our intake to include transport planning, finance and training, which is particularly exciting,” he added.
The move comes as part of the government’s ambition to deliver three million apprenticeships by 2020, with 30,000 across the transport sector. Bill Kelly, acting route MD for Network Rail in Wales and Borders, recently wrote for RTM about the successes of the country’s apprenticeship scheme, while NSAR’s Nigel Eagers wrote about the need to exploit the levy in order to attract better talent and maximise the sector’s potential.
Most recently, Aslef and Virgin teamed up to create the “next generation of drivers” with a new year-long scheme, while Network Rail promised to double the number of apprenticeship opportunities and introduce new paths into cyber security and digital railway training.
In October, Nexus’ transport strategy director, Philip Meikle, will speak at the exclusive TransCityRail conference in Manchester to explain how the organisation plans to expand its services. To attend, book your place today.
