RAIB to investigate after train stranded in sub-zero conditions

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has announced its intention to investigate incidents earlier this month which saw trains stranded in freezing conditions in London.

One such incident occurred on 2 March when a Southeastern train was stranded in Lewisham, with some passengers choosing to walk down the track causing fears that someone could be hurt.

Many people were trapped in the vehicle without the use of a toilet and with no heating, while temperatures dropped below freezing following a cold front that hit across the country.

RAIB officials have since announced: “Following a preliminary examination of the circumstances surrounding the events near Lewisham on Friday 2 March 2018, the RAIB has decided to launch a full investigation.”

More detail about the investigation is expected to be revealed within the next fortnight, with inspectors deciding on the scope of the investigation and exactly what it will involve.
