Virgin unveils new Newark Northgate forecourt as part of £1.2m scheme

Virgin Trains has unveiled Newark Northgate’s new forecourt, representing the latest stage of a £1.2m station improvement project.

The train operator has delivered a series of upgrades to the station, improving access and easing congestion during peak hours.

The latest changes include a new bus stop, relocating the car park entrance, and moving the taxi rank in order to alleviate traffic at the station, thus allowing better pedestrian access.

Since it has taken over the East Coast franchise, Virgin has spent over £500,000 on wi-fi, updating the waiting room and the new Cycle Hub, and reports that initial customer feedback has been positive.

These improvements form part of the operator’s £140m investment into the franchise.

Robert Jenrick, MP for Newark, and David Horne, managing director for Virgin Trains on the east coast, revealed the plaque marking the opening of the enhanced station front.

Horne said: “We're delighted with the revamped station front and proud of the time and money spent making journeys better.

“Newark Northgate is a very busy station and that's why we’ve invested £1.2M into improving customer facilities.”

Jenrick added that he is delighted that the station has been improved.

“Newark Northgate and the access it gives local people and businesses to the rest of the UK is at the heart of our local economy,” he stated.
