Delays between London and Manchester after fatality at Prestbury

A train fatally hit a man at Prestbury causing extensive disruptions today to journeys between London and Manchester.

Services from Manchester Piccadilly that may be cancelled or delayed by up to 45 minutes include CrossCountry services to Southampton Central, Bournemouth and Cardiff Central, Northern services to Stoke-on-Trent and Virgin services to London Euston.

Emergency services were called to the track at Prestbury at about 8.45am today after the man was hit by a train.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “Officers from BTP are currently at the scene and have located the body of a man. The line is closed and work is ongoing to establish his identity and inform his family.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”

Virgin, CrossCountry and Northern are allowing passengers to travel on alternate routes, a full list of which is available here.

Replacement bus services are running between Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester Piccadilly via Macclesfield.

The delays are expected to continue until 11.45am.
