LU and DLR improving faster than global counterparts

London Underground (LU) and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) have been named amongst the “fastest improving” metros in the world.

The latest International Metro Benchmarking report says that over the last three years, LU and DLR have both improved at a faster rate than the average metros across all seven lead metrics (operating cost recovery, operating cost, maintenance cost, labour productivity, reliability, environment and safety).

The report is a summary of the annual Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) reported by the members of CoMET (the Community of Metros), a group of 16 of the largest metros from around the world, and Nova, a group of 16 medium-sized metros, for the year 2013-14.

It was also noted that both LU and DLR have improved more rapidly than the average of other Western European and North American metros in the time period 2010-11 to 2013-14.

According to the report, this has been achieved through significant focus across the business on systematically improving reliability, driving down costs via the efficiency programme, whilst ensuring the highest levels of safety for customers and staff.

Over the period, sustained investment in modernising the LU network, as well as a rigorous focus on reliability, has seen a real difference for our passengers. For example, on the Victoria Line reliability has improved by 74% and on the Jubilee Line it has improved by 67%.

Gareth Powell, LU’s director of strategy and service development, said: “The work being carried out across the LU and DLR to improve the service we give our customers is now paying real dividends.

“Customers are benefiting from the upgrades of the Jubilee, Victoria and Northern lines and work is well underway to modernise the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. We continue to improve the train service and, at the same time, we are improving our safety performance and transforming the way we serve our customers.”
