Passengers travelling through Birmingham over Christmas 2026 are being urged to plan ahead after Network Rail confirmed Birmingham New Street station will have no train services in or out for five consecutive days while major infrastructure upgrades take place.
The closure, running from 24 to 28 December 2026, will allow engineers to carry out a £13 million programme to replace ageing overhead line equipment on the approaches to and through one of the UK's busiest railway hubs.
The investment forms the first phase of a wider three-year modernisation programme designed to improve reliability and resilience across the rail network. Further work is scheduled to take place during the Christmas periods of 2027 and 2028.
Major Power Line Renewal Planned
Network Rail will use the Christmas shutdown to renew complex sections of overhead power lines, much of which has remained in service since the 1960s. The equipment supplies electricity to trains operating on key routes through Birmingham and is considered critical to the long-term reliability of rail services across the region.
While Network Rail, train operators and local transport partners are working to minimise disruption, passengers should expect longer journey times and altered travel arrangements, including rail replacement buses and the use of local bus services.
Network Rail: Investment Will Improve Reliability
Martin Colmey, route director for Network Rail Central route, said:
“Birmingham New Street is at the heart of the rail network, supporting millions of local, regional and national journeys every year.
“Much of the overhead line equipment dates back to the 1960s and needs to be replaced. This £13m investment has been carefully planned to make the railway more reliable.
“There is never a good time for this type of work and we have done all we can to reduce its impact as much as possible. Christmas is a quieter time but we know it will affect journeys at an important time of the year.
“We want to make people aware as early as possible so they can plan ahead. As soon as tickets are available to buy for Christmas travel, there will be clear, detailed information to help passengers plan their journeys and make informed decisions.”
Station Facilities to Remain Open
Although rail services will not operate during the possession period, Birmingham New Street station itself will remain open to the public.
Passengers and visitors will still be able to access Grand Central, city centre connections, station retail outlets, toilets and the assisted travel lounge throughout the engineering works.
Network Rail has also confirmed that staff will be on site daily to support customers and assist those requiring additional help.

The work represents a significant investment in rail infrastructure at the heart of the West Midlands network. By replacing ageing overhead line assets now, Network Rail aims to reduce future failures, improve service reliability and support growing passenger demand in the years ahead.
Travellers intending to use rail services over the Christmas period are advised to check journey planners before travelling and allow additional time for their journeys.
