Bradford Interchange confirmed as new Northern Powerhouse Rail station in major boost for Yorkshire

Passengers across Yorkshire are set to benefit from a transformative investment in rail infrastructure after the Government confirmed that a new station will be built at Bradford Interchange as part of Northern Powerhouse Rail.

The announcement represents a significant milestone for Bradford and the wider North, placing the city at the heart of future rail connectivity plans. The new station will improve links to key economic centres including Leeds, Manchester and York, delivering faster journey times, increased service frequency and greater reliability for passengers.

The project is also expected to play a central role in the regeneration of Bradford's Southern Gateway. Combined with the proposed West Yorkshire Mass Transit system, the development could support thousands of new homes and jobs while generating up to £1 billion in economic benefits for the region.

The new station will form part of Great British Railways (GBR), the publicly owned railway body that will bring track and train operations together in an effort to create a more efficient, reliable and passenger-focused railway network.

The Government said the decision on the station location was made in partnership with West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin, supporting its wider commitment to devolving transport decision-making to regional leaders.

A key benefit of NPR will be the creation of a "turn-up-and-go" railway across the North, with services operating so frequently between major cities that passengers will no longer need to plan journeys around timetables.

Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander said:

"Today marks an important milestone for Bradford with a brand-new station that will transform how people travel across the North.

"By bringing Northern Powerhouse Rail into the heart of the city, we are unlocking the huge potential Bradford offers - improving connections, supporting economic growth and setting the foundations for new homes, jobs and opportunities across the region."

The new station is expected to be delivered during the 2030s and will replace the existing 1970s-era facility. It aims to provide a modern transport hub capable of supporting future economic growth while strengthening Bradford's role within the Northern Powerhouse Rail network.

The project also sits at the centre of the Government's wider Northern Growth Strategy, which includes electrification and upgrade works across routes linking Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and York.

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire said:

"Today is an exciting and important milestone for Bradford, with an iron clad commitment to a new station in the city centre.

"Bradford has so much untapped potential, and faster, more frequent trains to Leeds and Manchester, and the transformation of the city centre through Bradford City Village, will help to finally unleash it.

"Together with investment for northern powerhouse rail, a mass transit system for West Yorkshire and our brand-new Weaver Network, we are working in lockstep with the government to deliver a better-connected region.”

Industry leaders have long argued that Bradford has been underserved by intercity rail investment compared with other major northern cities. The confirmation of a new city-centre station is expected to strengthen the city's economic competitiveness, attract inward investment and help deliver long-term regional growth.
