Wabtec CSX fleet modernisation

CSX Revamps Train Fleet with Wabtec, Delivering Efficiency and Green Gains

In a bid to boost sustainability and operational performance, American rail freight company CSX has inked a deal with global parts supplier Wabtec Corporation to modernise over 200 locomotives.

This agreement expands on an earlier collaboration and demonstrates CSX's dedication to innovative, environmentally friendly solutions.

"This modernisation order underlines our commitment to delivering first-rate service for our customers, shareholders, employees, and communities," said Mike Cory, CSX Executive vice president and chief operating officer. "Wabtec's programme allows us to maximise the capabilities of our existing fleet, improving reliability and enabling us to move more freight with fewer locomotives, which also helps to shrink our carbon footprint."

The project focuses on upgrading CSX's AC4400 locomotives with cutting-edge digital solutions and hardware innovations.

"These modernisations will maximise the value of CSX's AC4400 fleet," explained Gina Trombley, Wabtec's executive vice president of sales and marketing and chief commercial officer in the Americas. "By integrating cutting-edge technology, we're boosting locomotive performance, fuel efficiency, and reliability, whilst simultaneously lowering maintenance costs. This modernised fleet is well-placed to support CSX's long-term sustainability and service goals."

The anticipated benefits are substantial:

  • Up to 8% fuel savings and carbon reduction: This translates to roughly 170 tonnes of carbon reduction per locomotive per year, with the combined order potentially resulting in 35,000 tonnes annually, akin to removing emissions from nearly 8,000 passenger cars.
  • Extended locomotive lifespan: Modernisations will prolong the operational life of the fleet for several years.
  • Enhanced reliability and performance: The project targets a 35% increase in reliability and a 14% improvement in tractive effort, leading to greater availability and capabilities at reduced costs.

Wabtec will execute the modernisation work at its US locomotive plants between 2024 and 2028. This agreement builds upon a previous order for 260 locomotive modernisations, most of which are already operational.
