East Coast Main Line Digital Signalling Tests to Impact August Bank Holiday Travel

Passengers travelling on the East Coast Main Line over the August bank holiday weekend are being urged to plan ahead, as major engineering work linked to the introduction of digital signalling will affect services south of Peterborough towards London.

The disruption will take place between 20:00 on Saturday 29 August and 08:00 on Monday 31 August, with some journeys requiring rail replacement bus services while critical testing work is carried out.

The works represent the final phase of preparations for the £1.4 billion East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP), one of the most significant rail modernisation schemes currently underway in the UK. The programme will replace traditional lineside signals with digital in-cab signalling technology, providing drivers with real-time information directly inside the cab.

Industry leaders believe the technology will ultimately improve reliability, safety and network performance while helping to create a greener railway.

The technology has already been successfully introduced on London's Northern City Line, where digital signalling entered service in 2025. This summer, the first section of the East Coast Main Line between Welwyn and Hitchin will begin operating with the new system.

Ricky Barsby, Network Rail head of access integration (ECDP), said:

“The work taking place involves the final preparations for us to begin a gradual introduction of digital in-cab signalling on the East Coast Main Line. The ability to control trains in this way will enable a more resilient and reliable railway that is fit for the future.

“We have carefully planned this work to avoid the busiest times of the August bank holiday weekend, and where possible passengers may be able to avoid this disruption by travelling before or after Sunday 30 August.

“We’re sorry to anyone whose journey is affected and grateful to passengers for their patience and understanding.”

Train operators have also encouraged customers to check before travelling and consider alternative arrangements where necessary.

A spokesperson for the train operators said:

“We’ve worked closely together and with Network Rail to keep customers moving and minimise disruption wherever possible. We encourage customers to plan ahead and check their journey before travelling so they can choose the option that best suits them."

The East Coast Digital Programme is expected to transform how trains are operated on one of Britain's busiest rail corridors, laying the foundations for the future deployment of digital signalling technology across the wider rail network.
