Passengers and freight operators across the East Midlands are set to benefit from a more reliable and resilient railway following the completion of a £6.95 million programme of infrastructure improvements by Network Rail. The work was carried out over two consecutive weekends on 15-16 and 22-23 August at key locations across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire.
The investment focused on enhancing track quality, improving drainage systems and renewing critical points equipment to reduce the risk of flooding, improve operational performance and support smoother journeys for years to come.
The programme included:
- Renewal of 583 metres of track at Ashwell, Rutland
- Renewal of 495 metres of drainage at Alfreton, Derbyshire
- Renewal of 576 metres of drainage at Kirby Bellars, Leicestershire
- Renewal of points at Blackwell South Junction, Derbyshire
- Refurbishment of seven sets of points at Trowell Junction on the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire border
The latest work builds on earlier investment in the region, including the recent renewal of half a kilometre of track through Alfreton Tunnel, further strengthening rail infrastructure between Sheffield and Nottingham.
Operations Director Eric Larocque said:

We’d like to thank passengers, freight customers and local communities for their patience and understanding while our teams completed these essential upgrades.”
The completed works form part of Network Rail's ongoing commitment to improving the resilience of the railway network and ensuring passengers and freight operators can rely on a safe, efficient and dependable service across the East Midlands.
