The East Coast Main Line has reached a historic milestone with the first passenger train operating under digital in-cab signalling on the route.
The 08:05 Great Northern service to Moorgate on 31 August became the first passenger train to use the new system on the main line, receiving its movement authority through the European Train Control System (ETCS) as it departed Welwyn Garden City station.
The achievement marks the latest stage of the £1.4 billion Government-funded East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP), one of the most significant rail modernisation schemes currently under way in the UK. The programme will ultimately replace traditional lineside signals with digital technology that displays movement authorities directly within the driver's cab, informing them how far and how fast the train can travel.
The long-term objective is to improve capacity, reliability, efficiency and sustainability across the railway. By reducing reliance on trackside equipment and providing operators with greater flexibility to manage disruption, digital signalling is expected to deliver significant performance benefits for passengers and freight customers alike. The technology also enhances safety by continuously monitoring train speed and automatically intervening if necessary.
This first deployment of ETCS on the East Coast Main Line covers the 15-mile section between Welwyn and Hitchin. Great Northern's Class 717 fleet will transition in and out of the digital signalling area when entering and leaving the route section.
Crucially, the route has been commissioned as an overlay system, allowing both conventional signalling and ETCS-equipped trains to operate simultaneously. This approach provides an opportunity for driver training and operational familiarisation ahead of wider deployment. Additional fleets and passenger services are expected to begin operating under the system from 2027.

“This stretch of digitally controlled track between Welwyn and Hitchin provides the opportunity for all operators to train drivers ready for the system to be extended still further.”

What Happens Next?
The successful deployment between Welwyn and Hitchin represents a key stepping stone towards the wider digital transformation of the East Coast Main Line. As more train fleets are equipped with ETCS and additional drivers are trained, digital signalling will become increasingly commonplace on one of Britain's busiest rail corridors.
For the rail industry, the milestone demonstrates that large-scale digital railway technology can now be successfully integrated into live passenger operations, paving the way for future deployments across the wider UK network.
