Passenger services have resumed between Haywards Heath and Lewes after railway teams completed a major recovery and reconstruction programme following the derailment near Lewes on 13 August.
The line has reopened in time for the start of the new school term after engineers successfully recovered the train and carried out extensive repairs to rebuild and reinstate the railway.
The reopening marks the culmination of an intensive effort involving teams from across the rail industry, who worked around the clock to restore services safely and efficiently. Before reopening, the route underwent a comprehensive programme of engineering inspections, testing and safety assurance procedures, including successful test train operations to confirm the railway was safe and reliable for passengers.
The recovery and reconstruction programme included:
- Recovering and removing all eight carriages from the site.
- Constructing temporary foundations and working platforms to support heavy lifting equipment.
- Deploying specialist Kirow cranes to recover the derailed vehicles.
- Removing damaged track and ballast.
- Repairing and reinstating the embankment.
- Installing new track and associated infrastructure.
- Reinstating signalling and railway systems.
- Completing extensive testing and final safety checks.
The incident location, close to the River Ouse and within an environmentally sensitive area, presented additional challenges. Engineers, environmental specialists and operational teams worked closely together to ensure the recovery and repair programme was completed safely and responsibly.

The reopening restores a key rail link across Sussex and provides passengers with the services they depend on following one of the region's most complex recent rail recovery operations.
