Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has appointed Kier to lead the design of significant accessibility and passenger experience improvements at Heaton Park Metrolink stop in Prestwich.
The project forms part of TfGM’s wider Metrolink Stop Improvements Programme, which aims to modernise tram stops across Greater Manchester while improving accessibility for all passengers.
Located on the busy Bury line, Heaton Park Metrolink stop provides access to the largest park in Greater Manchester, serving more than 600 acres of parkland and a popular venue for major events throughout the year.
Under the commission, Kier will develop designs for a range of upgrades designed to create a more accessible, welcoming and modern transport hub.
Planned Improvements
The proposed scheme includes:
- Enhanced step-free access through new ramps and larger lifts
- Demolition of existing stairs and construction of new stepped access to platforms
- Installation of new passenger waiting shelters
- Public realm improvements at the stop entrance
- Relocation of existing platform furniture
- Replacement of all signage and wayfinding systems
- Installation of a new pedestrian track crossing
- Drainage improvements
The upgrades are expected to benefit a wide range of users, including passengers with reduced mobility, families with pushchairs and visitors travelling to events at Heaton Park.
Accessibility at the Forefront
Ian Davies, TfGM’s Network Director for Metrolink, said:
“Heaton Park is a key stop on Greater Manchester’s tram network, serving local residents and visitors to one of the city-region’s most popular leisure destinations. These upgrades will help create a more modern, welcoming and accessible facility for the people who use it.
“Accessibility is a key priority for us and we will be making changes to the stop enabling easier access for passengers with mobility issues, people with pushchairs and those travelling with heavy luggage.”
“The work at Heaton Park forms part of a wider programme to improve stops across our network, creating a more comfortable, accessible and convenient experience for people travelling by tram in Greater Manchester.”
Building on Greater Manchester Presence
For Kier, the appointment strengthens its growing portfolio of transport infrastructure projects across the region.
Mandy Duncan, Managing Director for Rail and Aviation at Kier Infrastructure, said:
“We’re delighted to have been appointed to develop the design of this scheme, which will enhance accessibility and improve the overall experience for passengers using Heaton Park Metrolink stop. We look forward to working in close partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester and partners.
“This appointment builds on the other projects we are currently delivering across Greater Manchester, including wider accessibility improvements at six railway stations and engineering upgrades near Manchester Victoria.”
The Heaton Park project is the latest investment in Greater Manchester’s tram network, with TfGM continuing to prioritise accessibility, passenger comfort and improved connectivity across the Metrolink system.
