Rail passengers travelling to and from Liverpool are being urged to plan ahead after Network Rail confirmed that Liverpool Lime Street station will be closed to overground services on Sunday 8 November to allow vital infrastructure improvements to take place.
The closure is required to facilitate essential maintenance work in the Mossley Hill area, a key route into Liverpool and one of the busiest approaches to the North West's second busiest railway station.
Engineers will carry out work to strengthen and secure the track foundation, known as ballast, using specialist tamping trains. The improvements are designed to maintain the reliability and safety of the railway network, ensuring smoother journeys for passengers in the future.
As a result of the work, no passenger services will be able to operate through Mossley Hill during the engineering possession.
Despite the disruption, passengers will still be able to access Liverpool city centre through a combination of rail replacement bus services and the Merseyrail network. Network Rail and train operators are advising customers to check their journey details before travelling and allow additional time.
Liverpool Lime Street station itself will remain open throughout the day, with additional staff available to assist passengers and provide travel information.

“We know there’s never an ideal time to close the railway, so I’d like to thank people in advance for their patience while we carry out these essential railway improvements.
“We’re working closely with our train operator partners and colleagues at Merseyrail to provide alternative travel options into Liverpool on Sunday 8 November and encourage people to plan ahead by using National Rail Enquiries.”
