Passengers on the West Coast Main Line were able to resume their journeys earlier than expected on Sunday after Network Rail successfully completed the emergency removal of the deteriorating Oxhey Grange footbridge near Watford.
Engineers worked throughout the night and into Sunday morning to dismantle and remove the ageing structure, which spanned one of the UK's busiest railway corridors. The complex operation was completed ahead of the planned 4pm handback, allowing train services to restart sooner and reducing disruption for thousands of passengers.
The bridge was removed in a single lift using a specialist 1,200-tonne heavy-lift crane capable of lifting up to 100 tonnes. Network Rail said this approach significantly reduced the length of time the railway needed to remain closed compared with alternative removal methods.
The emergency work was undertaken after inspections revealed the bridge had suffered significant structural deterioration. Removing the structure was considered the safest option to protect passengers, railway staff and the surrounding community.
Images and video footage released following the operation highlight the scale and complexity of the engineering challenge, with teams working around the clock to safely extract the bridge from above the busy main line.
Gary Walsh, director for Network Rail's West Coast South route, said:

Train operators also paid tribute to passengers for their patience during the emergency closure and praised the collaboration across the rail industry.

The successful completion of the project demonstrates the railway industry's ability to respond rapidly to emerging infrastructure issues while minimising disruption to passengers. Reopening the route ahead of schedule was a significant achievement given the scale of the engineering challenge and the importance of maintaining safety on one of Britain's most heavily used rail corridors.
