Network Rail Targets Reliability Improvements with Major Argyle Line Engineering Work

Network Rail will carry out a programme of essential engineering and maintenance work across Glasgow's Argyle Line and Glasgow Central Low Level station over two weekends later this month, with services affected while upgrades are completed.

The work, scheduled for 24-25 October and 31 October-1 November, is aimed at improving the long-term reliability of one of Scotland's busiest commuter routes while reducing the risk of infrastructure-related delays.

Engineers will repair sections of the concrete track foundation within the Argyle Line tunnels near Exhibition Centre and Dalmarnock, while also replacing rail and other track components at Rutherglen station.

The engineering programme has been designed to extend the lifespan of key railway assets and improve operational performance across the route.

Taking advantage of the line closures, Network Rail teams will also undertake a broader package of maintenance and enhancement works.

At Glasgow Central Low Level station, engineers will repair overhead lighting, replace ageing platform wall panels and carry out a deep clean of the station environment.

In addition, signalling and control systems used to manage the safe movement of trains through the tunnels will be upgraded, alongside detailed inspections of track, tunnel infrastructure and railway systems.

The work will require temporary changes to ScotRail services across both weekends.

Service alterations

Saturday 24 October and Sunday 25 October

  • No service between Rutherglen and Exhibition Centre via Glasgow Central Low Level.

Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November

  • No trains will operate between Partick and Rutherglen.

Argyle Line - Low Level 1

Gary Hopkirk, route programme director at Network Rail Scotland, said:

"The Argyle line carries thousands of passengers every day through the heart of Glasgow. Because sections of the route run through tunnels beneath the city, we need occasional closures like this to get in and carry out maintenance that isn't possible while trains are running.

"As well as looking after the track and signalling equipment that keeps services moving, we're taking the opportunity to make improvements at Glasgow Central Low Level station too. By bringing a range of work together over the same weekends, we can improve the railway, enhance the station environment and help reduce the risk of any unplanned disruption in the future."

Mark Ilderton, ScotRail service delivery director, said:

"This essential work will help improve the reliability of the Argyle line and the experience for customers using Glasgow Central Low Level.

"There will be changes to services across both weekends, so we're asking customers to check their journey before travelling and allow some extra time.

"We're working closely with Network Rail to ensure customers can continue to travel with confidence while the work takes place, and we thank everyone for their patience and understanding."

The coordinated programme reflects Network Rail's continued focus on maximising access opportunities, allowing multiple improvement projects to be delivered during the same possession period and minimising future disruption for passengers.
