A major milestone has been reached in the delivery of East Renfrewshire's newest rail facility after the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) granted authorisation for Balgray station, paving the way for passenger services to begin on 27 September.
Located on the Neilston line between Neilston and Patterton, the new station will serve growing communities around Barrhead, offering improved connectivity for commuters, students and leisure travellers. The development is also expected to enhance access to the nearby Dams to Darnley Country Park, providing a sustainable transport option for visitors.
The regulator's approval covers all key elements of the new station infrastructure, including two 125-metre platforms, a fully accessible footbridge with lifts, passenger waiting shelters, station systems and an 80-space car park equipped with 16 electric vehicle charging points.
ORR authorisation represents a critical stage in bringing new railway infrastructure into service. The process ensures projects meet stringent requirements covering health and safety, accessibility, environmental protection, reliability and operational readiness before opening to the public.
Throughout the approval process, ORR worked closely with Network Rail and the wider project delivery team to ensure the necessary inspections, assessments and surveys were successfully completed.
