Rail Minister Andrew Stephenson

Rail Minister commits to development of regional infrastructure at TCR North

After a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic TCR North returned to Manchester last week with an array of rail industry leaders appearing.

The conference held at the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel saw speakers from across the rail sector debate and contribute their thoughts to some of the key topics facing the industry.

Amongst the guest speakers on the day was Minister of State for Transport Andrew Stephenson MP.

During his speech delivered at TCR North Mr Stephenson detailed how the Government’s much anticipated ‘Integrated Rail Plan’ will be revealed soon.

Whilst addressing those in attendance the Pendle MP spoke on his vision for rail in the North and how rail will play its part in the economic growth of the region.

Mr Stephenson said: “The Government is committed to finally giving the North the infrastructure it deserves but for too long has lacked.

“Our planned investment will be the most significant upgrade to the Northern railways since they were built.

“The economic centre of gravity is shifting North.

“With advanced manufacturing in Lancashire, wind power off the Yorkshire coast and green hydrogen in Teesside.

“I believe the North’s best days lie ahead not in the history books; rail is crucial to delivering this vision.

“Attracting businesses, delivering green economic growth and promoting all that this region’s cities and towns have to offer.”

TCR North proved to be a key opportunity for face-to-face dialogue between rail industry leaders after 20 months of lockdowns and Covid restrictions.

The importance of events like TCR North when it comes to improving rail infrastructure in the North was emphasised by Mr Stephenson.

Mr Stephenson added: “Regional events like this are so important particularly here in the North.

“I want to see the transformational rail investments in the North of England delivered by people in the North of England.

“We need to ensure we’re training up our young people about the really exciting opportunities that there are in the rail sector.”

Rail industry leaders will once again have the opportunity to meet at TCR Midlands on 10th February 2021.

TCR Midlands will prove to be another unmissable occasion for leaders and stakeholders to debate and share ideas on the biggest issues facing the industry.
