RSSB appoints Iain Lanaghan as Non Executive Director and Audit & Risk Chair

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) has announced the appointment of Iain Lanaghan to its Board as a Non‑Industry Non‑Executive Director, alongside the role of Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee, effective from 1 May 2026.

Lanaghan brings more than four decades of Board‑level experience across complex infrastructure sectors, including transport, energy, water and defence. His career spans senior executive and non‑executive roles, with a strong focus on financial governance, audit, risk management and strategic oversight.

Earlier in his career, Lanaghan served as Group Finance Director of FirstGroup, the UK bus and rail operator, before moving into a portfolio of senior leadership positions across regulated and safety‑critical industries. His background provides a blend of first‑hand transport sector insight and deep expertise in assurance and governance.

Commenting on the appointment, RSSB Chair Chris Burchell said:

‘Iain brings deep audit and risk expertise alongside first hand experience of the transport sector. That combination will be particularly valuable as RSSB continues to support the railway through evidence based advice, assurance, and strong governance.’

Lanaghan said he was looking forward to contributing at a pivotal moment for the industry:

‘I am pleased to be joining the RSSB Board and to take on the role of Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee. At a time of significant change across the railway, I look forward to contributing to RSSB’s direction and to the effective stewardship of the organisation.’

The appointment comes as RSSB continues to play a central role in supporting the railway through independent analysis, standards development and risk‑based assurance, amid ongoing reform and transformation across the sector.
