Saudi Arabia Railways and Hitachi Rail have signed a major contract to modernise the Al Mashaaer Al Muqaddassah Metro Project (MMMP), further strengthening their long-standing partnership and supporting Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 transport ambitions.
The agreement will see the two organisations work together to upgrade the metro system that serves the Holy Sites of Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat during the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
The Al Mashaaer Al Muqaddassah Metro is one of the world's most significant mass transit systems, playing a critical role in moving millions of pilgrims safely and efficiently during Hajj. The 18-kilometre network features nine stations and is capable of transporting approximately 72,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
Under the new contract, SAR and Hitachi Rail will focus on enhancing the system's reliability, operational performance and long-term sustainability, helping to ensure the railway continues to meet the growing demands of one of the world's largest annual gatherings.
The project forms part of the Kingdom's wider strategy to develop world-class transport infrastructure while improving the mobility experience for pilgrims travelling between the Holy Sites.
The latest agreement builds upon years of successful collaboration between SAR and Hitachi Rail. Both organisations say the project will contribute towards the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 by delivering sustainable, passenger-focused transport solutions and supporting the continued development of Saudi Arabia's rail network.

The contract highlights the importance of rail in supporting large-scale passenger movements and reinforces the role of advanced signalling and operational technologies in maintaining safe, reliable and efficient transport services during peak demand periods.
As Saudi Arabia continues to invest heavily in public transport and railway infrastructure, the Al Mashaaer Al Muqaddassah Metro revamp represents another key step towards delivering a modern, resilient and passenger-centric rail network.
