A major upgrade of the Saxmundham rail junction on the East Suffolk Line is scheduled for autumn 2026, marking another significant milestone in preparations for the construction of Sizewell C and the future movement of freight by rail.
The renewal project is designed to improve the resilience and reliability of the Suffolk rail network while enabling the infrastructure required to support the transportation strategy for the new nuclear power station. Under the Sizewell C logistics plan, around 60% of construction materials will be delivered by rail and sea, helping to reduce the number of heavy goods vehicles on local roads, ease congestion and cut transport-related emissions.
Located at a critical point on the network, the Saxmundham junction links the Leiston branch line with the East Suffolk Line and forms part of the designated route that will carry heavy freight services transporting construction materials to the Sizewell C site.
Modernising a Key Freight Connection
The existing manually operated junction will undergo a complete modernisation programme. The work will include the installation of a new powered crossover, enabling trains to move more efficiently between the Leiston branch and the East Suffolk Line.
Once completed, the new infrastructure will be controlled remotely through an integrated signalling system based at Colchester, improving operational efficiency and reliability while supporting increased freight movements in the years ahead.
The scheme forms part of the wider programme to reinstate and enhance the Leiston branch line, which will play a central role in supporting one of the UK's most significant infrastructure projects.
Additional Signalling Improvements Along the Route
To maximise the benefits of the planned railway closure, Network Rail engineers will also carry out a range of other improvement works between Westerfield and Halesworth.
These include the installation of new signalling equipment and systems as part of the broader East Suffolk Line enhancement programme. Separate works will take place at Bealings level crossing, where engineers will install infrastructure to support future safety upgrades.
Nine-Day Closure Planned
The engineering programme is scheduled to take place over nine days, from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November 2026.
During this period, Greater Anglia services operating on the East Suffolk Line will be affected, with replacement travel arrangements expected to be introduced while the railway is closed.
Once completed, the improvements will provide a more modern, reliable and resilient railway capable of supporting both passenger services and the substantial freight demand generated by the construction of Sizewell C.
The investment represents another important step towards delivering a transport strategy that aims to minimise disruption on local roads while ensuring the large volumes of construction materials required for the project can be moved in a more sustainable manner.
