GBR Anglia has marked a significant milestone in its programme to improve accessibility at Southend East station, with key sections of a new accessible footbridge and lift structures successfully installed during a major weekend possession.
The project, being delivered through the Department for Transport's Access for All scheme, will provide two new lifts and a fully accessible footbridge, making journeys easier for passengers with reduced mobility, as well as those travelling with luggage, pushchairs and other accessibility needs.
Working around the clock, teams from GBR Anglia and principal contractor Octavius used a large crane to lift substantial concrete and steel components into position. The operation involved the installation of the main supporting structures for the future footbridge and lift shafts, bringing long-awaited accessibility improvements visibly closer to completion.
The latest construction phase represents one of the most significant milestones in the Southend East upgrade project, with the station's transformation now clearly taking shape.
Attention will now turn to the next stages of the scheme, including fitting out the new footbridge, installing operational lift equipment within the lift shafts, and carrying out comprehensive testing and commissioning activities.
Subject to successful testing, safety approvals and final authorisation, the new accessibility facilities are expected to enter public service in spring 2027.
GBR Anglia, which brings together c2c, Greater Anglia and Network Rail Anglia under a unified leadership structure, says the approach is designed to create a more integrated railway and deliver better outcomes for passengers across the region.

The weekend engineering works also saw progress at Chalkwell station, where contractors installed piled foundations that will support a future Access for All footbridge and associated lift shaft structures.
Both schemes form part of wider efforts to improve accessibility and inclusivity across the Anglia rail network, ensuring stations are easier to use for all passengers.
