TPF Orders 13 Stadler FLIRT Evo Trains in CHF117m Fleet Modernisation Programme

Fribourg Transport Authority (TPF) has awarded Stadler a contract to supply 13 new four-car FLIRT Evo electric multiple units, marking a major step in the modernisation of regional rail services across the Swiss canton of Fribourg.

The CHF117 million investment will see the latest generation of Stadler's FLIRT platform introduced from December 2028, with the new trains gradually replacing the ageing Domino fleet over the following years.

Designed specifically for regional rail operations, the FLIRT Evo units have been developed to meet the demands of routes characterised by frequent station stops and shorter journey times. Wide doorways will help reduce dwell times, while high acceleration and braking performance, combined with a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h, will support more reliable and efficient services across the network.

Improved Capacity and Passenger Comfort

Each four-car train will measure 73.5 metres in length and provide 164 seats, with total capacity for up to 369 passengers including standing accommodation.

Passengers can expect a brighter and more spacious interior, with Stadler incorporating open-plan layouts and enlarged multi-purpose areas to accommodate bicycles, pushchairs and luggage more effectively.

The trains will also feature modern passenger information systems and numerous power outlets, helping to enhance the onboard experience for commuters and leisure travellers alike.

Fully Accessible Design

Accessibility has been a key consideration in the specification of the new fleet.

The FLIRT Evo trains will offer step-free boarding, level internal circulation between entrance areas, dedicated wheelchair spaces and accessible toilet facilities, allowing passengers with reduced mobility to travel independently and comfortably.

Leveraging National Procurement Efficiencies

TPF was able to secure favourable procurement terms by joining an existing framework arrangement negotiated by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) during a comprehensive tender process undertaken in 2021.

The collaborative approach enabled the operator to benefit from previously agreed contractual options and pricing arrangements, delivering additional value for the regional transport authority.

Industry Leaders Welcome the Order

“We are very much looking forward to these new trains entering service. Comfortable, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and offering high capacity, the FLIRT Evo trains will help us cope with the rising passenger numbers on our routes,” explains Serge Collaud, Director General of TPF.

“The 13 four-car trains form the basis for even more attractive regional transport in the canton of Fribourg,” adds Christian König, Deputy Sales Manager at Stadler. “Passengers can look forward to bright and comfortable trains with modern facilities. I would like to thank TPF for the trust they have placed in us.”

First Train Scheduled for December 2028

The first FLIRT Evo train is expected to enter commercial service on the TPF network in December 2028. Additional units are planned to follow at roughly two-month intervals.

As deliveries progress, TPF will gradually withdraw its Domino fleet from service. Once the rollout is complete, the operator's standard-gauge fleet will comprise eight FLIRT trains and 13 FLIRT Evo units. A further ten FLIRT trains will continue operating on the metre-gauge Montbovon to Palézieux route.

The investment underlines TPF's commitment to delivering a more attractive, accessible and higher-capacity rail service while preparing for continued passenger growth across the Fribourg region.
