Train Station Platform Validators Go Live Across Northern Ireland Rail Network

Translink NI Railways has activated new platform validators (PVs) across its entire network, marking a major milestone in the organisation’s Future Ticketing System (FTTS) programme. The upgrade aims to streamline customer journeys, modernise fare validation, and support Northern Ireland’s long‑term sustainable transport goals.

The rollout follows a successful pilot phase, where passengers quickly adapted to the new validation process. Translink says the move will make public transport “first choice for travel” by offering smoother, more intuitive ticketing experiences.

Translink’s William McGookin said:
“This important ‘go-live’ milestone across our rail network follows a successful pilot at selected stations where we saw customers quickly adapt, finding the validators straight-forward and hassle-free.

“The use of customer platform validators is well established across other rail operators, as well as across our Glider network, and we hope it quickly becomes part of regular travel habits across our rail network."

“We would like to reassure everyone that validating is very easy – simply present your smartcard to the card reader or present your paper or mobile barcode ticket to the barcode scanner – you will see a green tick on the PV screen if the ticket is valid or a red ‘X’ if invalid.

“Senior Smartpass customers and other concessionary Smartpass holders should continue to get their paper ticket for travel from a Ticket Vending Machine.

“We would like to thank our customers for their support as we deliver another key ticketing milestone, driving modal shift for a sustainable transport future.”

What the New Validators Mean for Rail Users

The new PVs require passengers to validate before boarding, whether using a smartcard, paper ticket, or mobile barcode. The system gives an immediate on-screen confirmation—green tick for valid tickets, red ‘X’ for invalid—reducing ambiguity and helping improve revenue protection and data accuracy across the network.

The validators align NI Railways with common practice across other modern rail operators, supporting a consistent user experience across Translink’s multi-modal services, including Glider.
