Transport for London (TfL) has awarded a contract to Telent to upgrade fire safety capabilities at Canary Wharf Elizabeth Line station.
The station, which opened in 2022, is one of the largest and most popular on the Elizabeth Line, and connects Canary Wharf with the National Rail network.
Telent is working for the Rail for London Infrastructure (RfLI) to upgrade the existing fire detection and alarm system. The upgrade will see the removal of redundant elements and simplifying the previous configuration to enhance user-friendliness.
Reg Cook, Telent’s Director of Asset Management, said: “This is a really exciting opportunity for Telent to demonstrate to TfL, our capability in fire safety maintenance, apply our expertise and experience of working on the Elizabeth line, and grow our extensive relationship with TfL even further.
“We’re proud to have made good progress on the project so far and look forward to developing our fire business further with TfL.”
The project will also simplify the task of upgrading assets for future improvements. Telent will decommission any third-party interfaces that are no longer required to make it easier to maintain the Canary Wharf system.
Telent has previously worked to design a solution to monitor and manage station fire isolations remotely. Known as the Remote Fire Isolation Project (RFIP), this technology means engineering work can be performed safely without dust or smoke triggering evacuation alarms.
Telent also has an extensive record of previous work on the Elizabeth Line, and was awarded a contract extension in 2020 to maintain CCTV across the whole network. Telent also supports the Driver Only Operation (DOO) CCTV system, which transmits images from platform cameras to in-cab screens, ensuring safe departure from station platforms.
