Surface work begins on eastern section of Crossrail
Construction work has begun in three key areas of the surface section of the Crossrail Anglia route as part of the £150m spur project by Network Rail.
Work in the 16.4-mile section from Stratford in east London to Shenfield in Essex will form one end of the eastern section of Crossrail.
VGC Construction Group has been awarded a £2.3m contract with Costain to undertake civil engineering works for the tracks.
This includes vegetation clearance, cable route works, bases for signalling equipment (including principal supply points), signals, location cases, and standard and staged FSPs. VGC will also install points heating bases, build walking routes and undertake electric earthing. Work is taking place alongside live, operational tracks.
Director of VGC, Jacques Kriel, said: “This type of contract is our ‘bread-and-butter’ at VGC Rail Projects. We’re proud to play our part in Crossrail, which will eventually transform the experience of commuters and longer-distance travellers between London, Essex and beyond.”
Costain had previously won the major north east contract in March 2014 to deliver the infrastructure and stations between London and Essex. The project, in collaboration with Network Rail, is intended to take place between late 2014 and 2017.
It will include track renewals, installing overhead line equipment, turnback facilities, and major station improvements at eights stations along the route.
