Network Rail shows off refurbished railway bridge in Wales

Network Rail has completed works to improve and enlarge a railway bridge in the Vale of Glamorgan to help traffic flow and accommodate future electrification plans.

St Bridges Road, between Ewenny and St Bridges Major on the B4265 in Wales, was upgraded from a one-lane bridge to a wider structure with increased capacity for two lanes of traffic and a pedestrian footway.

The £1.9m project, jointly funded by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Network Rail, has also included raising the bridge slightly to allow for potential electrification.

Loren Curry, programme manager for Network Rail, said: “We try to avoid reconstructing bridges where possible, but St Bridges Road bridge was coming to the end of its life and needed to be replaced.

“The new and improved bridge will help improve traffic flow for the local community and won’t need to be replaced for more than 100 years.”
