North East rail repairs complete

Repairs on the railway in the North East are complete this morning, following damage from storms and flooding last Thursday.

Embankments had to be rebuilt as areas of the track bed had been torn away at Haltwhistle on theNewcastletoCarlisleline, and Scremerston on the East Coast Main Line.

No trains ran between the Haltwhistle andCarlisleroute this weekend while Network Rail carried out the necessary repairs. The Haltwhistle line reopened at 6am this morning, and the first train ran over the renewed site at Scremerston at a reduced speed on Sunday at 8.30am.

Warrick Dent, general manager for Network Rail, said: “I would like to thank passengers for their continued patience while we completed these significant works. Our engineers have worked around the clock to restore services as quickly as possible. The fact that we have a full service running this morning is a testament to them.”

The bad weather last week affected several main routes in the north ofEnglandand inScotland, with many services disrupted, delayed or cancelled.
