Southern services cancelled due to Balcombe flooding

Flooding in the south east has led to train services being cancelled in Sussex.

Balcombe tunnel has flooded, preventing trains travelling between London and Brighton. Services between Tunbridge, Kent and Redhill have also been cancelled, and rail replacement buses have been affected by flooding on the local roads.

Many passengers have been stranded at Brighton station as a result.

Southeastern and First Capital Connect are accepting Southern tickets for travel.

Southern tweeted: “Trains are not able to run between Three Bridges & Haywards heath due to flooding of the line at #Balcombe.”

And Network Rail’s route managing director for Sussex, Tim Robinson, said: “It has been a difficult start to the day and we apologise to passengers for their disrupted journeys today. Heavy rain last night and this morning has landed on already saturated ground and run off onto the railway in several locations.

“We are working hard to get the lines clear again as soon as possible.”
