Person hit and killed by train on Dawlish railway

Emergency services were called to Devon’s main railway line at 6am this morning after a person was hit by a train.

The British Transport Police confirmed they were dealing with a fatality, although there are no further details yet as to the identity of the person, or why they were on the lines.

All trains were suspended and services continued shortly after 8am but with significant delays of up to an hour.

The BTP, Network Rail and train operators have been providing regular updates at stations and via social media:

The BTP gave the following statement:

"Officers were called to Dawlish train station shortly after 6am this morning, Thursday 28 June, following reports of a person being struck by a train.

"We attended along with colleagues from Devon and Cornwall Police and the South Western Ambulance Service but sadly the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are working to identify the person and inform their next of kin."

We will bring updates as we get them.
