DLR Extension to Thamesmead and Beckton Riverside Wins Strong Public Backing

Plans to extend the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead have received strong backing from residents and stakeholders, with more than 550 consultation responses supporting a project that could unlock thousands of new homes, jobs and regeneration opportunities across east and south east London.

Transport for London's (TfL) latest consultation attracted 553 responses, including 527 from members of the public and 26 stakeholder organisations. The consultation, which ran from 5 June to 16 July 2026, focused on the design of proposed new stations at Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead, customer access arrangements, and construction approaches aimed at minimising disruption to local communities and businesses.

A key driver behind the project is the creation of Thamesmead's first rail connection, helping to address long-standing transport challenges in one of London's largest areas without direct rail access.

Respondents highlighted the potential benefits of improved public transport links, stronger access to employment and education opportunities, and the wider economic growth and regeneration the extension could bring to both sides of the River Thames.

Feedback also underscored the importance of ensuring fully accessible stations, safe walking and cycling links, strong bus integration and safeguarding opportunities for future DLR extensions beyond Thamesmead.

While support for the scheme remains high, concerns were raised around construction impacts, with respondents citing traffic disruption, noise and environmental effects as key issues. TfL says these factors will continue to be assessed as the project progresses.

Industry and Political Leaders Welcome Progress

Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, said:

"It’s great that we have reached the next milestone of this vital project, following the Government’s backing of our plans in last year’s budget. This scheme has the potential to transform travel in a part of the capital that has historically lacked the public transport connections it needs. It will unlock thousands of new homes and jobs, and boost economic growth across the capital and beyond, as we work to build a greener, fairer and more prosperous London for all."

Alex Williams, TfL’s Chief Customer and Strategy Officer, said:

"Thank you to everyone who took part in our latest consultation on plans to extend the DLR to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead.

"The responses we received show continued strong support for the scheme and recognise the important role it could play in improving public transport connections, supporting new homes and jobs, and unlocking growth on both sides of the River Thames.

"We have carefully considered the feedback received and will use it to help develop the proposals further as we continue working towards submitting an application for permission to build and operate the scheme."

The project has also received support from MPs and local authority leaders, who view the extension as a catalyst for housing delivery, employment growth and improved connectivity.

James Asser, MP for West Ham and Beckton, said:

"I’m pleased to see the public back the significant impact the DLR extension will deliver for East London.”

"It will bring investment, jobs, homes and better connectivity to our communities, and I look forward to seeing the project proceed at pace."

Thamesmead 1

Abena Oppong-Asare, MP for Erith and Thamesmead, said:

"It is encouraging to see strong support for bringing the DLR to Thamesmead, something I have campaigned for since I was first elected. Residents have waited far too long for the connections they deserve. This extension could make everyday journeys easier and open up access to jobs, education and new homes.

"Thank you to everyone who shared their views. I will keep working with TfL, the Mayor, Greenwich Council and our partners to deliver this vital link, ensuring local voices shape the plans and existing communities benefit."

Mayor of Newham, Forhad Hussain, said:

"I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who shared their views during the consultation.

"The responses show that local people care deeply about having good quality housing and transport infrastructure on their doorstep.

"Extending the DLR into Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead will mean more jobs, better public spaces and better access to other parts of London.

"I am looking forward to seeing proposals brought forward next year that take on board the views of local people and result in better homes, better connections and better prospects for thousands of people."

Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said:

"A new DLR station would be a game changer for Thamesmead, giving residents better connection to jobs, education, and opportunities across London. Alongside this, it would unlock Thamesmead's enormous potential, helping to deliver thousands of much-needed homes and supporting the growth of a thriving town centre and strong local economy.

"We are ambitious for Thamesmead's future as a flourishing riverside neighbourhood and look forward to working with our partners to bring these plans to life."

Next Steps

TfL will now use consultation feedback to refine the scheme ahead of a planned Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) application in 2027. The organisation will continue working alongside the Mayor of London, the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the London Borough of Newham, Homes England and other partners as the project moves towards the next stage of development.

If approved, the extension is expected to become one of London's most significant rail-led regeneration schemes, supporting substantial housing growth while improving accessibility and connectivity across the capital's eastern corridor.
