Network Rail Completes Major Track Renewal at Alfreton Tunnel to Boost Reliability on Sheffield-Nottingham Route

Network Rail has completed a significant track renewal programme at Alfreton Tunnel, strengthening reliability and improving ride quality for passengers and freight operators travelling between Sheffield and Nottingham.

Engineering teams worked throughout the weekend of 8-9 August to replace nearly half a kilometre of track within the Derbyshire tunnel as part of Network Rail’s ongoing railway investment programme.

The project involved the renewal of life-expired track components, helping to reduce the risk of future infrastructure faults while delivering a smoother experience for passengers and more dependable journeys for freight services using the route.

Given the challenging tunnel environment, specialist safety measures were introduced throughout the works. Mobile ventilation systems were deployed to maintain safe airflow levels for engineering teams operating within the confined space.

The successful completion of the scheme marks another step in Network Rail’s wider commitment to improving railway performance, reliability and resilience across the East Midlands.

Eric Larocque, Network Rail operations director, said:

“I'd like to thank passengers and our industry partners for their patience while we carried out this important work at Alfreton Tunnel.

“The successful renewal of nearly half a kilometre of track will help us provide smoother and more reliable journeys for passengers and freight services using this route for years to come.

“I’m grateful to everyone involved in delivering the project safely and efficiently, and to passengers for planning ahead while the work took place.”

The investment is expected to deliver long-term benefits for both passenger and freight traffic, supporting more reliable operations on a key route linking South Yorkshire and the East Midlands.
