Transpennine Route Upgrade Reaches Major Milestone at Church Fenton

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) has completed a significant phase of improvement works in Church Fenton, bringing the programme another step closer to delivering faster, more frequent and more reliable rail services across the North of England.

During a nine-day possession between 24 October and 1 November, engineers worked continuously to install a new railway bridge at Common Lane and complete the installation of overhead line equipment that will support future electrified services between York, Leeds, Huddersfield and Manchester.

The replacement of the Common Lane bridge marks a key investment in the long-term resilience of the route. The original structure, which dated back to 1901, was approaching the end of its operational life. By bringing forward the bridge replacement by a year, TRU has maximised access to the railway, allowing infrastructure upgrades to be completed more efficiently while also laying the foundations for future electrification works.

The proactive approach is expected to minimise future disruption for both rail passengers and the local community by reducing the need for additional road and railway closures.

Despite challenging weather conditions caused by Storm Boelo, the project team successfully maintained progress. Planned activities were rescheduled in advance, enabling works to be paused during the worst of the weather before safely resuming. As a result, the railway reopened on schedule.

Throughout the closure, passengers continued to travel via a comprehensive network of rail replacement bus services, ensuring communities remained connected while the work was carried out.

Industry Praises Successful Delivery

Adam Sellers, TRU Senior Sponsor, said:

"We’ve completed this major work at Church Fenton safely and on time, bringing us a step closer to more frequent, faster, greener trains between York, Huddersfield, Leeds and Manchester."

"A big thank you to our teams who worked around the clock and in very challenging weather conditions to deliver this latest milestone."

Carl Harland, TRU Customer Lead for Northern, said:

"We would like to thank our colleagues from across the industry for completing these works at Church Fenton and keeping our customers moving over the past nine days.

"The upgrades that have been delivered form an integral part of transforming the route between Leeds and York, helping better connect our communities. Thank you to our customers for their patience whilst these major upgrades have taken place."

Focus Turns to Road Reopening

With the new bridge now in place, attention has shifted to relocating utility services that were diverted as part of the construction programme. Once these works are complete, the road will be rebuilt and is scheduled to reopen in June 2027.

Wider Improvements Across North Yorkshire

The Church Fenton works formed part of a wider programme of investment across the region. Over the same period, engineers also delivered a series of enhancements on the East Coast Main Line in North Yorkshire, including:

  • Track and points renewals
  • Overhead line equipment upgrades
  • Drainage improvements
  • Vegetation management
  • Platform infrastructure enhancements

These upgrades are designed to improve reliability, support future growth and provide smoother, more dependable journeys for passengers using the route.
