A major milestone for rail connectivity in East Renfrewshire will be reached this weekend as the new £18.3 million Balgray Station officially opens to passengers on Sunday 27 September.
Located in Barrhead, the new station has been delivered to support one of the area's fastest-growing communities and is expected to encourage greater use of sustainable public transport, while improving access to employment, education and leisure destinations across the region.
The station, funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal, represents a collaborative investment from the UK Government (£7.87 million), Scottish Government (£7.87 million) and East Renfrewshire Council (£2.57 million). The project has been completed ahead of schedule and within budget by Network Rail, working alongside East Renfrewshire Council, Transport Scotland, ScotRail and Story Contracting.
Balgray Station has been designed with accessibility and sustainable travel at its core. Facilities include step-free access via lifts, secure cycle storage, WiFi-enabled waiting shelters, ticket vending machines and an 80-space car park equipped with electric vehicle charging points. New pedestrian links have also been created to connect the station with nearby residential areas and existing walking routes.
The arrival of the new station is expected to provide residents with improved access to Glasgow and Scotland's wider rail network, while also boosting connectivity to popular local destinations such as Dams to Darnley Country Park.

The project also delivers wider social and economic benefits beyond the railway. More than £1.6 million has been spent with local businesses across the Glasgow City Region, while over 350 young people participated in careers and education engagement initiatives linked to the scheme. In addition, project staff contributed more than 400 volunteering hours to support community programmes.
The UK Government has highlighted the role the station will play in improving local opportunities and connectivity.

From Sunday, ScotRail services will begin calling at Balgray Station, providing residents with a new and convenient gateway to Glasgow and destinations across the national rail network.
The opening marks another significant infrastructure success delivered through the Glasgow City Region City Deal programme and reinforces the rail industry's commitment to creating sustainable transport solutions that support local growth and community development.
