Stadler has been awarded a contract to supply two new hybrid rack-and-pinion locomotives for Switzerland’s iconic Rochers-de-Naye mountain railway, marking another major milestone in the comprehensive modernisation of the historic route.
The contract, signed with Transports Montreux-Vevey-Riviera (MVR AG), a subsidiary of the Montreux-Berner Oberland Railway (MOB), will see the bespoke locomotives enter service in 2029 alongside a fleet of new panoramic passenger railcars already on order from Stadler.
Designed specifically for infrastructure maintenance on the steep mountain line between Montreux and Les Rochers-de-Naye, the new four-axle Hem 4/4 locomotives will gradually replace existing maintenance vehicles currently operating on the route.
Built at Stadler’s manufacturing facility in Bussnang, the locomotives will be engineered to tackle the demanding gradients of the 800mm-gauge railway. Each vehicle will deliver a maximum power output of 1,320kW and a starting tractive effort of 220kN, providing the performance required for operations on one of Switzerland’s most challenging rack railway lines.
At 13.5 metres long, the locomotives will have a top speed of 25km/h and feature a hybrid propulsion system, enabling operation both under overhead electrification and using diesel power. The dual-mode capability will provide greater operational flexibility and resilience during maintenance activities.
The vehicles have also been designed with a strong focus on functionality and operator comfort. Large front and side windows will improve visibility for drivers, while the cab layout has been developed to create a more ergonomic and practical working environment.
The locomotive order forms part of a wide-ranging upgrade programme aimed at futureproofing the Rochers-de-Naye line, one of Switzerland's most popular mountain railway destinations thanks to its spectacular views over Lake Geneva and the Alps.
In May 2025, MVR awarded Stadler a contract for eight newly developed panoramic rack-and-pinion railcars. The approximately 40-metre-long trains will accommodate up to 216 passengers and have been purpose-built to enhance the tourist experience on the scenic route.
Like the new maintenance locomotives, the passenger fleet is being built in Bussnang and is expected to enter passenger service from 2029.
Alongside the new rolling stock, Stadler is delivering a major signalling upgrade across the entire 11-kilometre route between Montreux and Rochers-de-Naye. The company will install its NOVA Pro CBTC signalling system, which provides train control, traffic management and automation functions.
The technology will be integrated across both the new passenger vehicles and maintenance locomotives, ensuring seamless operation between rolling stock and signalling infrastructure.
Yves Marclay, Managing Director of the Montreux-Berner Oberland Railway (MOB AG) and MVR AG, said:
“With these two new locomotives, we are reaching an important milestone in the comprehensive modernisation of our Rochers-de-Naye line. Not only are we renewing our passenger trains, but at the same time we are laying the foundations for reliable and efficient infrastructure maintenance. Together with the new signalling technology and the renewal of the railway infrastructure, this creates an integrated system that will equip us for the coming decades.”

MVR is also investing significantly in wider infrastructure upgrades, including the renewal of overhead line equipment, power supply systems, points and other railway assets. The programme of works is scheduled to be completed in phases through to early 2029.
By combining new rolling stock, advanced signalling and modernised infrastructure, MVR aims to secure the long-term safety, reliability and efficiency of the famous mountain railway while continuing to deliver a world-class visitor experience on one of Switzerland’s most dramatic rail journeys.
