SYSTRA has been appointed to lead the feasibility study for a proposed monorail network in Dar es Salaam, marking a significant step forward in Tanzania's plans to modernise urban transport infrastructure.
The ambitious scheme would comprise three routes, known as the Red, Orange and Yellow lines, with an initial pilot section proposed on the Yellow Line connecting Dar es Salaam's central business district with Julius Nyerere International Airport.
The study will assess the project's technical requirements, route alignment, available technology solutions, projected costs and the most effective delivery model. Its findings will ultimately determine whether a monorail represents the best long-term transport solution for one of Africa's fastest-growing cities.
With Dar es Salaam's population expected to reach around 10 million by 2030, pressure is mounting on existing transport networks. City leaders are seeking sustainable mass transit options capable of reducing congestion, improving connectivity and supporting future economic growth.
The proposed monorail system aims to deliver faster, more reliable public transport while cutting journey times and reducing travel costs for passengers. It is also expected to improve access to employment opportunities, commercial districts and essential public services across the city.
Speaking about the project, Alexander Farnell, Country Head – Tanzania at SYSTRA, said:
“This feasibility study is a crucial step in determining the best way to deliver a modern, efficient and sustainable transport solution for Dar es Salaam’s future growth.”

A key objective of the feasibility phase will be to identify opportunities for private sector involvement. Tanzania Railways Corporation intends to use the study to provide greater clarity for potential investors, technology providers and rail infrastructure suppliers interested in supporting the scheme.
Beyond transport improvements, the project is anticipated to generate wider economic benefits, including job creation, increased investment, improved business productivity and rising property values along the proposed corridor. It could also help drive more coordinated urban development across the rapidly expanding metropolitan area.
The initiative forms part of the Tanzanian Government's broader National Development Vision 2050, which seeks to accelerate sustainable urbanisation and economic growth through investment in modern infrastructure.
If approved, the monorail would become one of the most significant urban transit developments in East Africa and could serve as a model for other rapidly growing cities facing increasing mobility challenges.
