Net Zero Rail | Leaders Debate - Alternate Energy Sources

Electrification, Hydrogen or Battery Power?

Although rail has a lower environmental impact than many other means of transportation, the industry is working to minimise its environmental impact even more.

Following the phase-out of diesel-only engines, an alternative energy supply is required to offer a greener future for both passenger and freight services.

Rail is destined to be the backbone of the UK's green recovery.

Although electrification appears to be the most advantageous, are there any options that have a significantly lesser environmental impact?

On 21st October #RTM365's Net Zero Rail event explored all options, including:

  • Hydrogen Power
  • Battery Power
  • Electrification
  • Diesel Hybrid Power

Watch the debate on-demand now and hear from speakers including David Clarke, Technical Director, Railway Industry Association Dr Stuart Hillmansen, Reader in Railway Traction Systems and Head of the Traction Research Group and Martina Zeiner, Graz University of Technology at the Institute of Railway Engineering and Transport Economy.
